Commodities
Contracts, Funds & Hybrids
(June
21, 1999)
"Would
it be possible for you to tell me if the following three
items are correct or if not -- direct me to someone who
can.
1.
Commodities Contracts -- You need to put up as little
as 2% to 10% of the value of the underlying commodity
contract to get in on the action. "
2. Commodity
Funds -- Is there a secondary market?
3.
Hybrid Commodity Funds Some brokerage firms offer the
chance to take a toe-in-the-water approach to the commodities
markets through hybrid instruments that combine a commodities
investment with a safe one. Such hybrids may promise you
your money back if you stay the course, plus a shot at
making big money in the commodities market. Say that you
invest $10,000. A hybrid fund may take $6,000 of that
to buy US Treasury zero-coupon bonds that return $10,000
in five years at maturity. This means that you're fairly
well assured of getting your original investment back
if you hold your shares for five years. Your remaining
$4,000 goes to a smart commodities manager who may just
get you a nice additional profit. The problem with these
funds is that they are expensive. One popular offering
collects a fee of 6% per year on total net assets?even
on funds just sitting there, invested in Treasury zeros.
As noted in the fine print in the prospectus, that's equivalent
to a 15% annual fee on the $4,000 you have invested in
commodities. You could do a lot better on your own by
finding a less risky speculation and buying your own T-zero.

Supercharts
(June
18, 1999)
"1st
of all , excellent web site. Very helpful to the novice
(me). I am reading Schwager's Tech Analysis book , and
want to do some testing. Read the review of Supercharts
and it seems to be what I need. Could you answer the below:
- Would
I be able to program Supercharts be able to figure out
true highs, true lows, run days, etc, given some period
of data? (I do programming for a living, just wondering
about the robustness of Supercharts).
- Also,
do you recommend any data service? (I know Supercharts
accepts many brands of data.)
- Would
the above service be able to supply continuous futures
data?
Thanks
very much for your help, B.W.

The
Enigmatic Larry Williams
(June
17, 1999)
"I just wanted to take the time to respond to some
of your questions regarding Larry Williams.
Overall, I think Larry is a bit of an enigma. He is a
nice man and is very prompt in returning phone calls and
faxes.
I have purchased his video course- The Money Tree,
and I have attended a live seminar. I grasped the principles
in his video course but found the going a bit rough at
his jam-packed seminar. There seemed to be an information
gap between the video and the seminar. Other attendees
were a bit baffled as there was not a smooth transition
between the video and seminar. It was like two different
languages instead of one being a building block for the
other.
In talking to an attendee, he told me that a couple of
his friends spent a great deal of money to attend a day
trading seminar....something a bit more exclusive than
what we had attended. Anyway, he said his friends are
trading full time successfully in just six months after
this excursion with Larry.
Suffice it to say, one can make money implementing Williams'
methods; but it must be under more personal conditions--not
with two hundred people jockeying for position so they
can slobber on the god of commodities.
Also, Larry is pretty crafty. While he has a pristine
reputation I will give you a double-talking example. His
mailer is entitled "The Easiest Way to Make $10,000 a
Month". But when you pop in the video, Larry starts off
by saying "this is a tough business". He goes on to say
that money is energy and that the markets should pretty
much take all your energies. This all of the sudden doesn't
sound like the easiest way to make ten grand a month.
Overall, Larry's courses are a bit esoteric, but with
persistence and a lot of money to pay for instruction,
one can eventually, I say EVENTUALLY become a successful
speculator. One day I will perhaps attend one of Larry's
end-all, be-all seminars." T.T.

SuperCharts
End-of-Day (June
7, 1999)
"I read one of your positive comments on using SuperCharts
End-of-Day software. I just recently bought the Larry
Williams course and am in the process of studying that
and anything else I can get my hands on to learn more
about futures trading. I don't want to spend a lot of
money for software, but it sounds like SuperCharts End-of-Day
might be beneficial to me and it is much less expensive
than most of the others. Can you actually use this software
for futures trading, as opposed to stock trading? What
is the difference in SuperCharts End-of-Day and SuperCharts
Real-Time? I would appreciate any comments you might have.
Thanks." A.R.
